If you have followed the news recently, then you know that most vegetables and fruits labeled 'organic' are by no means organically grown. The non-organic or conventionally cultured and grown kind does not fare any better. In fact, some samples taken recently from supermarket shelves contained DDT, an extremely harmful pesticide long prohibited. Permited pesticides have been found at levels exceeding the maximum by up to 40 times. We must emphasize that the samples were not labeled 'organic', but it goes to show that there are very loose, if any, standards or inspections when it comes to vegetables and fruits before they are being sold in supermarkets.
